Does Chaga look like something you'd ever consider consuming at first glance? Probably not. Its exterior looks like something that's been long forgotten in the back of your fridge, and its interior is akin to a cluster of sawdust. However, what it lacks in aesthetics, it makes up for in nutrient density and immune support. Rich in polyphenols and fatty acids, Chaga has a long history of use in traditional medicine, where it has been used for centuries to improve overall health and treat various ailments.

IMMUNE SUPPORT

Over the years, research has supported Chaga's anti-cancer properties due to their high antioxidant content and the presence of both betulinic acid and superoxide dismutase (SOD)—two compounds that protect the DNA from oxidative damage and inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Some researchers believe Chaga stimulates the immune system, whereas others support that the antioxidative ability is what prevents cancer cell generation. Additionally, Chaga may have antiviral properties, with a 2020 study demonstrating its inhibitory effects against viral infections, including HSV.

ANTIOXIDANTS & ENERGY

Chaga is packed with nutrients. It contains vitamins and minerals such as potassium and selenium (a precursor to glutathione—the body's most potent antioxidant) and uniquely has a high concentration of antioxidants, specifically polyphenols. These compounds are known to combat oxidative stress, linked to numerous diseases and aging processes.

Additionally, Chaga is an adaptogenic fungi, which means it can help the body cope with stress and maintain balance. Its anti-inflammatory properties and earthy flavor make it an excellent complement to morning coffee, as it can help blunt the impact of caffeine crashes.

GUT AND SKIN HEALTH

Chaga's polysaccharides may support gut health by promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria. One 2021 study on gut microbiota determined that chaga extracts can help increase populations of probiotics such as Bifidobacterium to improve overall gut function and motility. When it comes to skin, Chaga's high melanin content earns its keep in supporting a healthy glow. Its high antioxidant profile provides protection against UV radiation and oxidative stress, which in turn can support more resilient skin and healthy aging.
