Acetyl L-Carnitine (ALCAR) is a modified (acetylated) form of L-Carnitine, a nitrogen-containing compound derived from L-Lysine. The carnitine molecule is necessary for the proper movement of fat molecules into the mitochondria for oxidation (fat burning). It seems to be beneficial for individuals suffering from a large array of maladies, including anorexia, chronic fatigue, coronary vascular disease, diphtheria, hypoglycemia, male infertility, muscular myopathies, Rett syndrome, as well as preterm infants, dialysis patients, and HIV+ individuals(1). ALCAR also seems to be very useful for age-associated cognitive impairment, such as Alzheimer’s(2). A controversial supplement for many years, its effect on exercise performance has not been established(3-6), or even a shift toward greater carbohydrate (less fat) oxidation(7,8,9). However, individuals with impaired muscle performance (possibly suggestive of deficiency) may benefit from L-Carnitine supplementation. A study by Pistone et al.(10) found that older individuals with highly fatigable muscles increased muscle mass, lost body fat, improved muscular performance and their blood lipid profiles simply by supplementing with L-Carnitine. 

Suggested Use

L-Carnitine is more bioavailable when consumed in the normal diet, although supplemental forms of L-Carnitine are also absorbed (up to 6 g dose,14-18% absorption). High doses can cause gastric distress(9). N-Acetyl L-Carnitine is absorbed intact, has similar pharmacokinetics as L-Carnitine, and elevates blood levels nearly 50%(11). ALCAR may be especially useful for older individuals suffering from muscle fatigue, cardiovascular disease risk and cognitive impairment(2). ALCAR could also be taken with Alpha Lipoic Acid to prevent mitochondrial damage, which occurs as we age(12).


As a dietary supplement, take 1 Serving (500mg) 1-3 times daily.

*12 month update** This product did exactly what it has been advertised for, actually beyond what I expected . I took 3-4 grams each day and pretty quickly (like a week) had noticeable fat loss around my body (and on the scale). It never gave me any anxiety/jitters associated with caffeine or make me feel strange like other name brands. It will give you gastrointestinal issues if you take too much on an empty stomach/without drinking enough water each day while consuming it. I would not recommend taking before bed because it did tend to make me slightly restless. The product did NOT suppress my appetite at all which was nice, and made me feel like I could continue to build muscle while losing fat. Also, make sure to eat while taking it, otherwise you can feel kind of fatigued/crumby if you are not eating enough while your body burns fat. You can actually feel really drained physically and mentally if you try and diet too hard when taking it. Youll feel a million times better if you throw in a couple meals when taking it, dont disregard what I say or your workouts might not feel 'quite right'. The powder has a smell similar to vinigar which is no big deal. For me, it was somewhat weird to see my body get cut from head to toe like I haven't had ever before. I absolutely could see the fat loss in my face, my arms/chest, and the rest of my body. My veins are easily visible throughout my body without a pump and look great when I am not working out. They look especially great when I am working out. Yet, I found in order to see the fat loss, it was 100% necessary to work out while taking it. If you take it without working out, you CANNOT accomplish what you are chasing. In conclusion, I would absolutely recommend this product to anyone trying to remove fat. I have never in my entire life been able to see my abs even while I ate healthily and continued to work out consistently until I started taking this. One of the only products I can confidently say helped me towards my weight loss/ workout goals. 3-4 grams a day and you wont be disappointed. Hope this review helps answer questions!!
