THE AMINO PROFILE | HISTIDINE

If your joints are screaming out in protest with every move you make, you just might be deficient in this amino acid. First isolated by the German physician Albrecht Kossel in 1896, Histidine is one of the 23 amino acids used to build proteins in humans. Employed by our bodies to develop and maintain healthy tissues, Histidine works most often with the myelin sheaths that coat nerve cells and ensure the transmission of messages from the brain to various parts of the body. For this reason, it’s said that getting enough Histidine is necessary for both balanced mental and physical health.

WHERE DO WE GET IT?

Like other amino acids, Histidine is found in many high-protein foods, such as meat and dairy products, as well as grains such as rice, wheat, and rye. Since it’s fairly easy for natural Histidine supplies to run short, it can also be supplemented solo or alongside other aminos to ensure we reap its benefits.

WHAT DOES IT DO?

Speaking of benefits, Histadine is the precursor for histamine and is often used to fight inflammation responses. Inadequate blood levels of L-histidine are found in individuals with rheumatoid arthritis, or RA. Eric R. Braverman, M.D., author of “The Healing Nutrients Within,” points out that histidine is the only amino acid to be consistently abnormal in people with these conditions. While Histidine is not guaranteed to help ease symptoms of RA, many sufferers of joint pain and RA claim it does just that for them.

Robert A. Ronzio, author of “The Encyclopedia of Nutrition and Good Health,”claims that L-histidine also plays a central role in combating anemia. The amino acid is a major building block for hemoglobin, the protein responsible for transporting oxygen within red blood cells. According to Ronzio, a deficiency of L-histidine can lead to anemia.

Other symptoms of histidine deficiency can include scaly dry skin, eczema and fatigue. Supplementing with histidine may also help those that struggle with seasonal allergies.
